The 300 Million Dollar Button

I’m not here to enter into a relationship. I just want to buy something.

This quote is money (literally) and points to something that companies need to think about (what are you users trying to do?). Just read an amazing article on User Interface Engineering (www.uie.com) about how poorly thought through usability effected one e-commerce site to the tune of 300 million dollars. The site forced it users to create an account in order to make a purchase. While many customers didn’t mind this, it inevitably added a step that hindered people from doing the one thing what they wanted to do: purchase something. The answer? The team that was hired to trouble shoot the process found that adding one single button was the fix… and it ended up increasing 45%.
